Chitol Maach er Kalia/ Spicy Chitol Fish Curry

Ingredients

  • Chitol fish- 6 pieces
  • Potato- 1 medium size (peel & cut into halves lengthwise, then cut each half lengthwise into 3 pieces)
  • Onion paste of 2 medium sized onions
  • Garlic paste- 1 tsp
  • Tomato- – 1 (finely chopped)
  • Garlic paste- 1tsp
  • Ginger paste- 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder- 1 1/4 tsp
  • Kashmiri mirch powder – 3/4 tsp
  • Nigella seeds/Kalojinre/Kalonji- 1/4 tsp
  • Slit green chilies- 8-9
  • Turmeric powder
  • Sugar- ½ tsp
  • Garam masala powder- ¼ tsp
  • Salt
  • Mustard oil

Method

Rub salt and a 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder on the freshly washed pieces of Chitol. Heat oil in a deep frying pan and fry the fish pieces till golden brown. Keep aside. Now fry the sliced potatoes, let the potatoes turn golden brown, remove them. If required add some more oil at this time. There should be 4-5 tbsp of oil to make the curry. For tempering add nigella seeds. Once it splutters add the onion paste and sauté till light brown in color, now add the garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes more. Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, ginger paste, cumin powder, kashmiri mirch powder, sugar, salt and 1/2 tsp turmeric powder. Frying it on medium heat till the masala starts leaving oil. With the help of the spatula mash the tomatoes. Now add 2 cup of water. Mix and give this a quick boil. Add the fish pieces and potatoes in this. Mix, cover and cook till the potatoes are done. All this on medium heat. Add the garam masla powder and mix well. Remove from heat.
