Lal Murgi r Jhol/Red Chicken Curry

Every Bengali knows and loves this ‘Lal Murgi r Jhol/Red Chicken Curry’. This Chicken Curry+Sundays are just made for each other. Chicken pieces cooked in a spicy, delicious, finger-licking good curry (much thinner in consistency that’s why this is ‘Jhol’) with large potato chunks. Have this with steamed rice and Go straight to heaven. After having this a nap is equally important, that is what Sunday afternoons are made for ! ๐Ÿ˜‰

The recipe is very basic and simple one, what a novice can also cook easily. So, here it goes…

Lal Murgi r Jhol/Red Chicken Curry


  • Chicken- 500g (with bone, medium sized pieces)
  • Potato- 3 medium size (wash, peel and cut into halves)
  • Onion- 3 medium size (thinly sliced)
  • Tomato- 2 medium size (roughly chopped)
  • Bay leaf- 1
  • Whole dry red chili- 1 (broken)
  • Black peppercorn- 1/2 tsp (roughly crushed)
  • Green cardamoms- 4-5 (roughly crushed)
  • Cloves- 3-4
  • Cinnamon- 1″ (two pieces)
  • Salt
  • Sugar- 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard oil
  • Few slit green chilies- 4-5
  • Kashmiri Mirch Powder- 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- ยฝ tsp
  • Ginger paste- 1 tsp
  • Garlic paste- 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder- 1 tbsp (hipped)
  • Coriander powder- 3/4 tsp
  • Hot water- 1 1/2 cup
  • Fresh coriander leaves- 1tsp roughly chopped (optional)


Heat 4-5 tbsp oil in a deep frying pan. Fry the potatoes, let them turn golden brown in color, remove and keep aside. In the remaining oil add bay leaf, dry red chili, green cardamoms, black peppercorn, cloves and cinnamon. Stir for few seconds. Add sliced onions, fry untilย light brown in color. Add the ginger-garlic paste, cumin powder, coriander powder, kashmiri mirch powder, turmeric powder and chopped tomatoes. Mix well & mash the tomatoes with the help of the spatula. Fry on medium flame till fragrant (1-2 minutes max). Add chicken pieces, fried potatoes and green chilies. Cover and cook on low flame for 15 minutes. Stir in between. Now add hot water, mix, cover and cook on low flame until the chicken is fully cooked. Add salt when chicken is half cooked. Add sugar at the end, and cook for 2-3 minutes more. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Your super yummy ‘ Lal Murgi r Jhol ‘ is ready.

Serve hot with steamed rice. Have a blissfulย Sunday!
