Poshto Chicken/Chicken in poppy seed gravy

A childhood favorite recipe of mine, which Ma often cooked for us on request. After a long time hubby cooked this while Ma prompted the recipe to him & I was giving the proxy. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Poshto Chicken/Chicken in poppy seed gravy


  • Chicken- 1kg
  • Onion paste of 3 medium sized onions
  • Poppy seed paste- paste of 50g poppy seed (wash & grind poppy seeds in a blender with 1or 2 green chilies and water. The paste will be thick, not watery. So stop the blender in between and keep adding little amount of water. Finally it will form a smooth thick paste)
  • Garlic paste- 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder- ยพ tsp
  • Whole dry red chili- 2 broken
  • Green cardamom- 4 (slightly crushed)
  • Cinnamon- 2 pieces (1/2″) (slightly crushed)
  • Bay leaf- 1
  • Black pepper- 1 tsp (slightly crushed)
  • Few slit green chilies
  • Vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Kashmiri mirch powder- ยพ tsp
  • Sugar- 1tsp
  • Ghee- 1 ยฝ tbsp


Heat oil in a deep frying pan, tamper with crushed black pepper, bay leaf, dry red chili, green cardamoms & cinnamons. Sautรฉ for few seconds, add onion paste and sautรฉ till golden brown in color. Then add green chilies, turmeric powder, ginger & garlic paste, stir for 5-6 seconds. Next to add the freshly washed chicken pieces, kashmiri mirch powder & salt, mix well. Cover & cook, stir in between. When chicken is half cooked, add poppy seed paste, mix well, cover & cook again, until the chicken is done. All this on medium heat. If you feel the gravy is drying only then add 1 cup of hot water. Otherwise no need to use water, mine was done without water. Now add sugar & ghee, mix well & cook for another 3-4 minutes.

Serve hot with roti, paratha, naan. If you like to have rice then steamed rice is just perfect with this. But I pair my โ€˜poshto chickenโ€™ with rumali rot, thatโ€™s the way I like it!
