Shepherd’s Pie with Keema Matar

In short “Cottage pie or shepherd’s pie is a meat pie with a crust of mashed potato.” (source: wikipedia).

I wanted to make Shepherd’s Pie aka Cottage Pie with an Indian twist for quite a long time, finally able to make it few days back with our very own ‘Keema Matar’ as a base. And it turned out really very yumm. The layers of this pie complimented each other very well & tasted awesome together. A must try dish from my kitchen!

  • Green onion- 1 (thinly sliced)
  • Milk- 5 tbsp
  • All purpose flour/ Maida- 1 tsp
  • Salt
  • Black pepper powder- 1/4 tsp
  • Butter- 1 tbsp

For the top layer

  • Boiled potato- 2 medium sized
  • Salt
  • Grated cheese (I used processed cheddar)

Method

Preparing Keema Matar

Heat oil in a frying pan. Add chopped onion sauté till light brown in color. Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, cumin powder, kashmiri mirch powder, salt & turmeric powder. Frying it on medium heat till the masala starts leaving oil. With the help of the spatula mash the tomatoes. Now add keema & peas, mix well. Cover & cook on low flame till the keema boiled (15-20 minutes approx.). Keep stirring in between. Add sugar, cook uncovered for 2-3 mins more, add garam masala, mix & remove from heat. Keep aside.

Preparing Vegetable Stir Fry

Add butter in a frying pan (nonstick preferably), add all the veggies along with black pepper powder & salt. Sauté for 2-3 mins on medium flame. Add milk & AP flour, mix quickly & sauté for one min more. By adding Milk & flour, the idea is to make a thin sauce which will coat the veggies nicely. Remove from heat.

Preparing the Top Layer

Mash the boiled potatoes, mix with little salt. Keep aside

Assembling the pie

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. Take a glass loaf pan (a round baking pan will also work). Layer the keema matar first. Next to make a layer with the stir fried veggies. Distribute mashed potato in the next layer. Top with grated cheese. Bake for 20-25 mins or until the top turns lightly browned. Remove from the oven.

Serve immediately. Enjoy! 🙂

Note:

Add salt carefully for every layer. Keep in mind that you are going to eat everything together as a pie, so adjust salt accordingly.

You can add or replace any vegetable of your choice.
