Spiced Jaggery Powder

My recipe experiments are not new to my readers. If you’re following my blog from some time, then you must know that I love creating different kinds of stuff with everyday kitchen ingredients. These are basic Indian spices which I’ve added here to make a flavourful Spiced Jaggery Powder that can be used as a sugar substitute in several recipes (read note). But why this jaggery blend, we could use jaggery powder straight away into our recipes, right? We still can, but why not making it a bit fancy yet very much earthy by combining layers of spices into jaggery. And these spices complement each other perfectly over a jaggery base. Imagine the end results which can be ranging from Spiced Atta Crackers to a jar of Overnight Oatmeal. All these spices along with jaggery have their own health benefits. A bottle of Spiced Jaggery Powder can be a good gifting option if you’re planning to gift something homemade to your near and dear ones. In fact, I’ve made a couple of bottles ready to gift my friends and family. I’ve planned for a Diwali Masala Basket which would consist Chai Masala powder, Garam Masala powder and this Spiced Jaggery Powder, all homemade. Sounds great, I know it is! So, you’re anticipating for what? Get a pack of powdered jaggery, mix in the spices, and start whipping up fabulous dishes. If you’re trying this recipe, don’t forget to share your experience with me. 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1 cup/230g- Jaggery powder
  • ¾ tbsp- Ginger powder/Sonth
  • 8- Green cardamoms
  • 1 tsp- Whole black peppercorn
  • 1 tbsp- Fennel seeds
  • ½ tbsp- Cinnamon powder

Instructions

  1. I’ve used locally brought non-branded Jaggery powder for this recipe. Making jaggery powder at home is a tedious task, if you cannot find jaggery powder in local stores buy online from Amazon.

  2. Discard the pods and grind the seeds of green cardamoms to a fine powder, keep aside.

  3. Dry roast fennel seeds until one shade lightly darker in colour. Remove from the heat, grind to a fine powder, and keep aside.

  4. Grind black peppercorn to a fine powder, and keep aside.

  5. Now mix all the ingredients in a bowl, store in an airtight container, and use as required.

Recipe Notes

  • Use this Spiced Jaggery Powder as an aromatic sugar substitute to your bakes (cakes, cookies, tarts), add into pancake batter, smoothies, overnight oatmeal etc.

Hi Chandrima, would you know of a machine in India that could grate Jaggery into soft fine particles. The Jaggery we produce in Sri Lanka is made of Kithul which contains a higher moisture than sugar cane Jaggery making it bind or dissolve at higher temperature. Is there a way to keep Jaggery from coagulating or dissolving when bottled in a glass jar. Any advice will help. Regards, A r j u n

    • Hi Arjun,

My Kitchenaid food processor helps to blitz the jaggery pieces well. And I always prefer storing jaggery in the refrigerator, they stay well for a long time.
