A Tea-tale in Memories of Kolkata

My fondness for tea started at a very tendered age. Dipping a biscuit into mom’s cup of tea and having that soft tea-filled one was always a mysterious experience. The magic of concoction was new to me and it was addictive. Although mom used to scold me for the same but enjoyed the adventure every morning. It continued till the time I grew up and realized the invocation of tea into the biscuits.

Undisputedly, Kolkata is the tea capital of the country. Kolkata’s affair with smoking hot tea and the aroma of clay cups (bhar) has carried on for centuries. Street-side tea vendors are an institution in every corner of Kolkata. The dusky clay cups lend their own aroma and characteristic to the tea.
Tea is an integral part of daily life in Kolkata and it is different from other parts of the country. A day starts with a cup of hot smoking tea, afternoon office breaks, evening tea with snacks, college bunking hours, late-night teas, etc.
Drinking tea is much bespoke and people customize it by adding cardamom, ginger, lemon, black salt, etc. with or without milk and so on.

However, good quality tea leaf doesn’t require any flavouring agent. Especially, if having first flush long leaf tea. That needs to be brewed for 2-3 minutes, and then have it without adding milk to experience the unmatched aroma. I was introduced to Majuli Mist First Flush Roasted tea a few days back and loved the smoky undertone that the tea offers while sipping it. The aroma reminds me of Kolkata, a city that breathes with a cup of Chai. The long tea leaves of Majuli Mist blooms beautifully, and you can identify the natural tea leaves. This tea is a keeper and a must-try if you’re a tea lover.
